TransferWise opens first US office

TransferWise, a member of the 2001 Future 50 alumni, has opened its first office in the US.

The money transfer company, which has raised $91m from investors including Peter Thiel, Richard Branson, Max Levchin and Andreessen Horowitz among others, has set up shop in Tampa, Florida.

TransferWise was founded in 2011 by Skype’s first employee Taavet Hinrikus and financial consultant Kristo Kaarmann. More than $750m is transferred through the platform each month, with the company claiming that customers save an estimated $34m on international transfer fees.

Just under 50 employees have been hired to launch the new office. An additional 200 positions are planned within the next three years.
